Airbox Adapter Flange Installation INTENDED: Most Yamahas | PERFORMED ON: Banshee | DIFFICULTY: 3/10 INTRO: Aluminum adapter plates/flanges are a great way to fix the troublesome setup from the factory on the Yamaha Banshee. The stock airbox and filter design can have sealing problems, which will cause debris to be sucked into your motor. The factory design on the Raptor 700R, 660R, and YFZ450 is definitely improved, but can still be enhanced with the addition of an aluminum flange/filter combo. Our kit, which consists of the aluminum flange and a K&N air filter with all hardware, cost around $90. Not a bad price at all when you take into consideration the costly engine repairs that can result from a faulty intake system. The info and photos contained in this article are from a Banshee, but will also be useful for the installation on most Yamaha ATVs.

STEP ONE: First thing you need to do with your Yamaha ATV is remove your stock filter element and clean your airbox thoroughly. Next, take the aluminum flange and place the bottom in the groove in the bottom of your airbox. Hold it down firmly while placing it against the airbox. Mark the airbox through each of the flange's holes on top with a marker or pen, then remove the flange.

STEP TWO: Now, take a drill with a 1/4" drill bit and drill a hole through both of the marks you made on the airbox of your Yamaha ATV. Clean up the holes by making sure there is no plastic burs around the holes, especially on the inside of the airbox, so the plate will fit flush against it.

STEP THREE: Take the O-ring supplied on your Yamaha ATV and smear some filter-sealing grease all over it thoroughly. Install the O-ring into the groove on the flange. Smear some more grease around the O-ring area.

STEP FOUR: Next take the flange on your Yamaha ATV with the O-ring installed, and set it back into the groove in the bottom of the airbox. Push it against the airbox tightly, like you did when marking the holes in step 1. Look through the opening in the flange to make sure the O-ring didn't become loose and is sticking out to where you can see it. If it can be seen, remove the flange from the airbox of your Yamaha ATV and try again until it is not visibile and appears to be seated correctly.

STEP FIVE: Now, while still holding the flange against the airbox of your Yamaha ATV, take one of the supplied bolts with a washer on it and thread it into the hole in the front of the airbox, and into the flange. Use a 12mm socket or wrench for this. Screw it in all the way until it stops, and repeat with the other side.

STEP SIX: When both bolts are screwed into the flange and airbox, take the nuts supplied and thread them onto the exposing bolt threads on the inside of the airbox. Use your 12mm wrench to tighten these down slowly, doing each side equally a little at a time until both are completely tight. Double-check again to make sure your Yamaha ATV O-ring is still seated properly, and then clean the inside of your airbox again very thoroughly so it is spotless.

STEP SEVEN: With the flange installation complete, you can now slip your new filter on to the flange itself, and tighten the hose clamp provided with a flat head screwdriver. The air filter used on this Banshee is a K&N brand. Put your Yamaha ATV airbox lid back on and you're all set, this time with peace of mind!
